INFO

What is UV irradiation for?

Of the wavelengths not visible to the human eye, the UV-A (315-400 nm) and UV-B (280-315 nm) wavelengths have a vital function in terraristics.

UV-A radiation is significant for the pigmentation and regeneration of the skin. Reptiles Irradiated with UV-A light shed their skin more often and with fewer problems. The UV-B range significantly affects the calcium balance. Vitamin D3 can only be formed in the reptile's skin through use of this specific UV radiation. Without vitamin D3, calcium absorbed with the nutrient cannot be processed. Without calcium, this leads to rachitic muscle weakness, osteomalacia and stunting of bones and ultimately to death. Whilst experts differ on wether Vitamin D3 intake via food may possibly replace UV radiation, they do agree that the additional light and heat via UV spotlights has an activity and reproduction enhancing effect on the animals.

How much UV-B irradiation?

In the absence of systematic tests for the individual UV-B radiation required by the various types of reptiles, the artificial radiation dose in the terrarium should resemble that of the original area as closely as possible.

The animals originating from deserts and savannahs of course require the most light and UV radiation, while forest and particularly rainforest inhabitants require less UV-B radiation since UV rays hardly penetrate the dense vegetation in their habitat. The UV-B dose is given by multiplication of the irradiation intensity and the irradiation period. Within a few minutes, strong UV spotlights (HOBBY UV Sun LUX, UV Ultra Lux) achieve the same dose the weak UV spotlights (HOBBY UV All Day, UV Compact) take several hours to reach. HOBBY UV spotlights provide accurate calculation formulae in their instructions for use. If the irradiation intensity of the area of origin or of the terrarium spotlight is not known, it is recommended as a rough guideline, the pet should be exposed to UV-B light for a specific time each day over several days while observing the results. It it stays under the UV-B radiator for the entire time of illumination, the irradiation time should probably be extended. If it pulls back and avoids the UV-B light, the irradiation should clearly be reduced.
